Free the Music - or no ?

Check it out - Oxford Union Debate - This House believes that "the free music mentality is a threat to the future of music.. Heh, this always makes me chuckle, primarily cause the powers that be seem not to get it. Pity no one in the music industry is likely to open up their entire back catalog and their wares via a subscription based internet model isnt it ! Who would buy that ?

Telstra leave Microsoft

Just browsing The Register and came across this article making the assertion that Telstra, Microsofts largest customer in the southern hemisphere, was looking to StarOffice.

All rumors Im sure. Original article here in Australian IT.

Personally, I've been using OpenOffice office for almost 2 months and it rocks !

Exit Strategies

I had a meeting with my accountant a few weeks ago, explained an idea for a business, and that I/We were getting a business plan together for this craaaazy concept. He received the speil well and had some excellent suggestions - one of which was an Exit Strategy.

An Exit Strategy !

So I've been background thinking about it for a while (2 weeks). I guess about half of that time was about me trying to defend the mental notion that 'Im just about to start this crazy idea - why should I plan on getting out at day 1' ? However, now I've replaced that notion with, ok well i'll ask the internet. :-)

Time to hit Google.

After Reading, reading, more reading, reading and finally, yes reading, plus alot of searching, Ive decided its a good thing (tm). The central premise, is that exit planning affects how a business grows. The above articles cover a variety of strategies, roughly boiling down to :

  • IPO

  • Build an asset to sell.

  • Give your business to your children.

  • Close your business down and sell the parts.

  • Manage 'til you drop dead' - (lets avoid this one).
  • Some of the more interesting articles, touched on business valuation and the seeming infinite methods thereof - I'll worry about that sometime after day 1 ! :-)

Yarks - No spam filtering !

Odd problems with the SpamAssassin (2.31) that came with Redhat 8.0 spam wasn't being tagged properly. Razor wasn't working properly either. v2.43 is now installed, running and working a treat.

    Site Upgrade

Todays starport server upgrade was a complete success. Those fortunate 25 or so people out there can look forward to massively reduced spam thanks to SpamAssassin, Razor running with Postfix and Maildrop.

IMAP is also available - unleash the power ! :-) or use webmail.

    Go cannon !

Cannon digital for under AUD$2000 - WOW ! It seemed too good to be true - and it was ! Tragically pc mag put a retraction at the top of their article - hopes dashed again... Guess i'll still have to wait for that affordable digital SLR ! Still, there is an 11.1mp model - nice to know what's ahead for the digital masses, in a few years time.
